INITIAL REGISTRATION FEE


Exemptions of the $225 Initial Registration Fee may apply if the motor vehicle being registered is owned and operated exclusively for personal use of:

  • Any service member, his or her spouse or dependent child, who is not a resident of Florida and who is stationed in Florida while in compliance with military orders. Any service member, his or her spouse or dependent child, who was not a resident of Florida and who is stationed in Florida while in compliance with military orders and is now becoming a resident of Florida.
  • Any former service member, his or her spouse or dependent child, who purchased a motor vehicle while stationed outside of Florida, who has separated from the service, was not dishonorably discharged, who was a resident of Florida at the time of enlistment and continues to be a resident of Florida, and applies for registration of such motor vehicle within six months after discharge.
  • Any service member, his or her spouse or dependent child, who was a resident of Florida at the time of enlistment, continues to be a resident of Florida, who purchased a motor vehicle while stationed outside of Florida, is now reassigned by military orders to Florida or who continues to be stationed outside of Florida.
  • Any spouse or dependent child of a service member who loses his/her life while on active duty or who is listed as missing-in-action. Such spouse or dependent child must be a resident of Florida and the service member must have been a resident of Florida at the time of enlistment. Registration must occur within one year of the notification of the service member's death or status as missing-in-action.

An Initial Registration Fee Exemption Form will be required attesting to which exemption you are claiming and must be signed by the service member along with any required documents, such as military orders, out-of-state driver license, DD-214, proof of military death notification or proof of MIA status.
