Larry Hart Day

by User Not Found | Feb 05, 2019

Tomorrow is a big day at the Lee County Tax Collector’s Office. Wednesday, Feb. 6 is our second annual celebration of “Honorable Larry D. Hart Day,” which Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson proclaimed in 2017 to recognize Tax Collector Larry Hart’s years of service and impact on our community.

To mark the occasion, we in the office will be wearing jeans, buttons and boots in honor of Larry Hart’s achievements and his time-honored motto: “You can get anywhere with a good pair of boots and a smile!” You too can show a little “heart” and support for Larry by downloading the Larry Hart Day logo and sharing it on your social media accounts.

Born and raised in Southwest Florida, Larry has spent his entire life working to serve the citizens of Lee County by providing opportunities and fostering the long-term success of the community. His commitment to service carried from his time in the U.S. Air Force through his experience at the FBI National Academy and into a 22-year career in law enforcement. He was the first African-American chief of the Fort Myers Police Department and worked to form a stronger bond between law enforcement and the community. His willingness to listen and compassion for the people he serves drove him to advocate for better education and mental health care.

He continues to serve by working to make the Tax Collector’s Office more responsive, more convenient, and more of a resource for people in Lee County. All the while, he’s lent his expertise to numerous community-focused organizations, including SalusCare, Quality Life Center, United Way, Hope Hospice, the Florida Gulf Coast University Advocacy Program, The Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida and the I Will Foundation.

Larry isn’t one to seek the spotlight, so while he’s humbled to receive a day in his honor, those who know him well say it best.

“Mr. Hart has worked so hard to get where he's at and deserves his own day,” said Pleshette Mims, Larry’s executive assistant. “I've never worked for anyone more deserving of a day than he!"
